February book of the month: The Beauty of Living Twice by Sharon Stone.

"The decisions I made as an eight-year-old trying to protect myself and my sister became not only a coping system but a way of life that I forgot to outgrow." ~ Sharon Stone

That line alone is worth the price of admission. So many of us are still living inside a strategy that made sense in childhood and makes no sense in the life we want now. Stone names it with a clarity that feels like someone turning on the kitchen light.

This is a colorfully written book about Sharon's life and experiences. She is inspiring, full of hard-won wisdom and powerful truths. Her candid vulnerability captures the beauty of pure honesty. She does not sand herself down for the reader. That is a gift.

I first listened to the audiobook, in Sharon's own voice. I found myself jotting down many of her profound declarations, then of course I had to order the paper copy as well. Some books you want in your ears and in your hands. This is one of them. Hearing her say the lines gives them extra voltage. Seeing them on the page lets you sit with them longer.

If you have ever wondered why a childhood coping system still runs the show in your adult relationships, work, or self-talk, you will hear yourself in these pages. Not because your story matches hers in the details, but because the pattern is human: we survive, we forget to outgrow the survival, and then we call it personality.

I think you would love it too. It is not a tidy self-help manual. It is a life, told with nerve, humor, and the kind of honesty that makes you braver about your own. Wisdom lands differently when it comes from someone who has actually lived the cost of it.

Read it. Underline it. Let it ask you what you are still doing at forty, fifty, or sixty that an eight-year-old invented for safety. Living twice, in Stone's telling, is not about becoming someone else. It is about finally growing out of the armor that once kept you alive.

This is also why the book belongs in a coaching conversation, even though it is a memoir. Coping systems that we forget to outgrow show up as people-pleasing, over-functioning, and a self we cannot quite relax into. Stone's honesty makes it easier to tell the truth about your own armor. If a line makes you sit up, write it down. Then ask, gently, what it would mean to live the second time on purpose.
